03 / FIELD NOTES

A few good
questions.

A little clarity before you head outside.

How accurate is it?

Sight Moon uses SunCalc to estimate the moon’s position from your coordinates and time. It is useful for finding the right part of the sky and planning a sighting. Your phone’s compass, nearby magnets, terrain and atmospheric conditions can affect what you see. A predicted position does not guarantee crescent visibility.

Why doesn’t the compass work on my iPhone?

Open Sight Moon in Safari, tap “Enable compass” in the finder and allow motion and orientation access when prompted. Keep your phone flat and away from magnets, magnetic cases and metal objects. Your device must have a supported orientation sensor.

Does it work offline?

Moon calculations run in your browser, so they work with a weak signal or without a connection once the page has loaded and stays open. Opening or reloading the page still needs a connection. Device location availability can vary offline.

Is my location stored?

Your coordinates stay in memory on your device while you use the page. Sight Moon does not send them to a server or save them in browser storage. Location access is requested only when you tap a location button, and you can enter coordinates manually instead.

Can I check a future date?

Yes. Set your location, then choose a date in the finder to plan ahead. The position is calculated for the selected date at the current local time of day.

Why is the moon “below horizon”?

A negative altitude means the moon is below the astronomical horizon at your location and time. It may not have risen yet, or may already have set. Even above the horizon, buildings, hills, clouds or daylight can hide it.
